WSET® Level 1 Award in Wines

The Foundation Certificate is an entry level qualification providing a straightforward introduction to wine. It is ideal for boosting the confidence of new or inexperienced front line staff in the hospitality and retail sectors. It is also a great course for those wanting to know the main grape varieties and food and wine matching.

Who it is aimed at

  • The Level 1 Award in Wines (Hospitality): Candidates with their first job in hospitality. (Please note only the hospitality strand is taught at the London Wine and Spirit Centre)
  • The Level 1 Award in Wines (Retail): Candidates with their first job in retailing.
  • Wine consumers wanting to know more about the main grape varieties and food and wine matching

Entry Requirements
Students and candidates who are under the legal minimum age for the retail purchase of alcoholic beverages in the country where the examination is being held will NOT be allowed to sample any alcoholic beverages as part of their course, but this is NOT a barrier for successfully completing the qualification. (except for London Wine & Spirit School where candidates must be 18 years or over)

How to gain the qualification
You must successfully complete:

  • a multiple choice paper of 30 questions
  • a food and wine matching exercise
  • a portfolio of tasting notes

Who is the course for?
This is an introductory course suitable for anyone wishing to start their wine education in a structured and concise way. You will acquire a basic understanding of grape varieties, what makes wine different, service of wine and food and wine matching.

For employers this course aims to equip your staff with a basic level of product knowledge suitable for their first job in wine sales and service.
